During a home remodel in Houston, the client removed the existing master bathroom flooring—only to uncover a rough, damaged concrete slab underneath. With no clear direction on how to move forward, the bathroom floor felt unfinished and out of place within the overall design. After discussing options, we introduced epoxy terrazzo as a solution—turning an unexpected problem into an opportunity for a clean, durable, and visually striking floor.
The Challenge
Once the original flooring was removed, the exposed concrete revealed a rough, inconsistent slab that was far from suitable for a finished bathroom floor. Visible patchwork, uneven sections, and surface damage made it clear this wasn’t something that could simply be covered up.
In one area near the toilet, remnants of existing terrazzo were discovered. However, the damage was too severe to restore, making repair an unreliable option. As the rest of the bathroom remodel moved toward a clean, modern design, the floor quickly became the biggest challenge. The client needed a solution that would correct the underlying issues while delivering a durable, seamless finish that would compliment the bathroom remodel.
The Restoration Process – Terrazzo Installation
Concrete Preparation & Repairs
We began by mechanically grinding the existing concrete surface to properly open the slab and prepare it for installation. This step is critical to ensure proper bonding of the terrazzo system.
Damaged and uneven areas were then repaired and patched to create a stable, consistent foundation. Proper surface preparation at this stage is essential for achieving a long-lasting and seamless final result.
Terrazzo System Installation
To ensure durability and long-term performance, a complete terrazzo system was installed. This included applying a flexible membrane to help manage minor substrate movement, followed by reinforcing mesh for added strength.
Divider strips were then installed in three locations to help control the layout and create clean transitions within the restroom in strategic locations.
Once the system was prepared, the epoxy terrazzo mix was installed, carefully distributed, and leveled to achieve a consistent aggregate blend throughout the floor.
Grinding & Polishing
After allowing the terrazzo to properly cure, the surface was mechanically ground to expose the aggregate and flatten the floor. Multiple grinding stages were used to refine the surface and remove any inconsistencies.
The floor was then polished to achieve a smooth, uniform finish with a clean, professional appearance.
Finish Selection
Because this is an epoxy-based terrazzo system, no topical sealer was applied. Adding a coating could alter the natural white tone of the matrix, potentially introducing a yellow hue and changing the overall appearance.
Instead, the floor was left in its natural polished state, preserving the clean white finish and allowing the aggregate blend to remain slightly softened—perfectly complementing the surrounding bathroom design.
The Results
The finished floor completely transformed the bathroom floor—from a rough, exposed concrete slab into a seamless, polished epoxy terrazzo surface.
The new installation delivered a clean, modern look that aligned perfectly with the overall bathroom remodel, while also providing a durable and low-maintenance flooring solution.
With a consistent aggregate blend and a smooth, uniform finish, the terrazzo now serves as a standout feature of the floor—improving both the appearance and functionality of the room.
