Flaking & Spalling on Slate

Flaking & spalling on slate appear as surface layers lifting, chipping, or breaking away from the stone. Because slate is naturally layered, it can separate along its cleavage planes under certain conditions.

What’s Happening

QSlate is a metamorphic stone formed from compressed shale. Its defining characteristic is its layered structure, known as cleavage planes. These natural layers allow slate to be split into thin sheets — but they also make it vulnerable to separation under stress.

Flaking and spalling typically occur when:

  • Moisture penetrates the stone and freezes (freeze-thaw cycles)
  • Improper sealing traps moisture beneath the surface
  • Exterior installations experience repeated wet-dry cycles
  • The stone is over-saturated from irrigation or poor drainage
  • Low-quality slate contains weak internal layers

As moisture enters the stone and expands, it can force layers apart. Over time, this results in visible surface loss, scaling, or edge chipping.

What To Do

If your slate is sealed…

Observe whether water beads on the surface. If so, a sealer is present. If flaking is occurring beneath a coating, professional removal of incompatible sealers may be necessary. Do not apply additional layers without diagnosing the moisture source.
