Efflorescence on Slate

Efflorescence on slate appears as white powdery residue or chalky buildup forming along grout joints, edges, or surface texture. It is caused by moisture moving through cement-based materials beneath or around the slate installation.

What’s Happening

SSlate itself is not cement-based, but it is often installed using cement mortar, grout, or setting beds that contain soluble salts.
