Efflorescence on Concrete

Efflorescence on concrete appears as a white, powdery, or crystalline residue on the surface. It is caused by moisture moving through the concrete and carrying dissolved salts to the surface.

What’s Happening

Concrete contains cement, which naturally includes soluble salts. When water enters the concrete — from rain, irrigation, groundwater, plumbing leaks, or improper drainage — it dissolves these salts.
